Metabesity

Project Director

Dr. S. Abbas Raza

Consultant Endocrinologist

Defining Metabesity has been challenging as it's a complex medical issue. Background of the problem is multifactorial, which differs due to epidemiological and differences in genetics among various regions of globe. Hence, it has a different impact for Pakistan due to its unique perspective.

It's about time, that we as a physician community should join hands to fight this epidemic. We should work together to better understand and device guidelines for better management of this unique condition.

“Metabesity Project” A multi-disciplinary approach to metabolic roots of chronic disease

“Metabesity” is a term coined by G Alexander Fleming MD, the term used to describe the package of interconnected diseases: diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia and neurodegenerative, diseases aging that have the same metabolic and inflammatory roots and are an enormous burden on health and economy.

As metabolic coordination disintegrates, we start to age. Pairing this disintegration with over nutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, and aging becomes the largest risk factor for the majority of chronic, non-communicable diseases.

Diabetes, Cancer and neurodegenerative diseases have metabolic roots, and may, therefore, be susceptible to common solutions. Early intervention against the right targets could lessen the pressure on the health system and improve health span. Advanced technology could usher in the age of precision medicine, which could in turn bring about more effective treatment and prevention.

In correlation to this, Getz Pharma has taken the initiative of starting ‘Metabesity Project’ to develop a health care framework to combat the uprising burden of Metabesity. Dr. Abbas Raza is the designated Project Director of the initiative.

Objective is a call to action for Health care Professional (HCPs)

Metabesity Project is a call to action and to start a silo-breaking conversation and developing tractable steps today to address local healthcare challenges.

Unify and create multi-disciplinary approach in management of metabesity, going beyond treating individual diseases to extending healthy life, by using innovative technology & improving skill, capability and knowledge of Primary Healthcare Providers.

Objective is to improve professional abilities to improve patient care & measure outcome related metabesity.

Develop a mechanism to implement a model for management of Metabesity; by using innovative technology (Testing devices & Equipment) , improving skills and Expertise Capabilities.

Creating a database/registry on the prevalence, management outcomes, reduction of complications and its impact on reducing burden of disease.

The Metabesity Project comprises of three major steps:

Formation of Metabesity Working Group that would drive and guide programs, events and research including guidelines.

HCP training programs with guidelines dissemination and learning opportunities in the field of Metabesity.

Establishment of Metabesity Management Clinics (Pilot Project) & Diabetes Excellence centers.

The Metabesity Working Group (MWG) is a wakeup call to initiate a silo-breaking conversation and developing tractable steps today to address local healthcare challenges. It is a multi-disciplinary approach where we would go beyond treating individual diseases by using reducing technologies to enhance healthy life & improving skillsets, capability and knowledge of Primary Healthcare Providers.

The Development of Metabesity guidelines was initiated and the lead author is Dr. Abbas Raza. This is a landmark publication, since, for the first time Pakistan’s five medical societies have collaborated and a task force was formed for the process completion of the project. The following medical societies were involved in the guidelines and endorsed them:

Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES)

Pakistan Cardiac Society (PCS)

Pakistan Nephrology Society (PNS)

Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology (PSG)

Pakistan Neurology Society (PSN)

These guidelines are published at Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA), vol.71, No.5, (Supp. 3),May 2021.

Building consensus amongst HCPs

Present Approach

Launch Pakistan’s first Metabesity Guideline

Bring five medical societies under single platform and formulate a uniform diagnosis , treatment, and parameters of Metabesity

Future Approach

More medical societies will be on-boarded in updated guidelines

Dissemination of the guideline will be harmonized & reinforced
